Retired teacher and artist, John Simkins, will lead students in developing their creativity using various artistic mediums. In the second week, they will practice studio and portrait photography and printmaking, specifically lithography. On the last day a small exhibit and reception will be held to show their finished work.

This summer we will host the 2019 Bradford Challenge , which is a book group meant to encourage those in the community to tackle a book or books that they may have been intending to read. This year, we are planning to read Jane Austen . On Tuesdays in June and July, we will host discussion groups over four of Austens most popular novels, complete with good conversation and a provided lunch. Copies of the books will be available to check out prior to the meetings. The Friends of the Library will be hosting a special event on Tuesday, June 25, at 6:00 p.m. at The Depot. They will be hosting Helen Collins, one of the original Harvey House Girls. The Harvey Houses were run by the railroad and served food fast with linen table cloths and crystal. Passengers selected their food from a menu while on the train, it was telegraphed ahead to the restaurant, and was ready when the train pulled into the station. Come and learn about a piece of our Butler County history as there is a Harvey House located in Florence, KS.

Have a Pre-K child who loves to make art? Join us at the Coutts Create Space on the last Wednesday of each month for an art-tastic time!

Starting at 8:45 a.m., we read a book with the children, followed by making art and other creative activities (sometimes we even dance!). Programs last from 30 minutes to 45 minutes long and are free to the public. Be sure you plan to have an adult stay with your child for the program and wear clothes that are ok to get messy! (We supply smocks, but sometimes art gets everywhere:) The Coutts Create Space is directly to the North of the Museum down the breeze-way; just look for the red door.

Dr Jay Price -Lecture Series The Road to Ivanpah

A native of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Jay M. Price directs the Public History Program at Wichita State University. His publications include Gateways to the Southwest: The Story of Arizona State Parks, Wichita, 1860-1930, Wichita's Legacy of Flight, and El Dorado!: Legacy of an Oil Boom. He and his students recently completed a history of the Cherokee Outlet Land Rush of 1893. He recently worked with a local public television station to turn his history of the El Dorado oil boom into a documentary. His other writings include works on local history, the history of tourism, regional identity, and American sacred architecture. A member of the Kansas Humanities Council speakers bureau and board of trustees, he has delivered the talks, "Reading Roadside Kansas," and "Sacred Landscapes of Kansas." Currently, his main project is "Temples for a Modern God," a study of mid-twentieth century sacred architecture.

Description:
Foster creativity and innovation in your Middle Shool student at the Coutts Museum of Arts Summer Art FOCUS! This two week class will be held from 1:00pm -4:00pm, Mondays-Fridays, from June 17-28, 2019. This class is open to students who will be entering 6th-8th grade for the 2019-2020 school year.

Retired teacher and artist, John Simkins, will lead students in developing their creativity using various artistic mediums. Each day the students will begin class developing their observation and drawing skills through various studies. In the first week, students will cover clay sculpting, acrylic painting, and collage. In the second week, they will practice studio and portrait photography and printmaking, specifically lithography. On the last day a small exhibit and reception will be held to show their finished work.
This two week class will cost $65 to cover costs of supplies during the class in addition to supplies that the students can take home after the class has finished.

City Commission Meeting

The City Commission meets twice each month, on the first and third Mondays, at 6:30 PM CST. The meetings are open to the public and held in the Commission Room of City Hall at 220 East First in El Dorado. For those who cannot attend, the meetings are shown LIVE on cable channel 7, as well as videotaped and rebroadcasted at 10:30 AM and 7:30 PM on Tuesday and Wednesday following the meeting. The meetings can also be viewed online.

The governing body is comprised of four City Commissioners and one Mayor, who presides over the council meetings. The City Commissioners are elected every four years, on a two year rotating schedule. Every two years, the mayor and two of the commissioners are elected. The governing body serves the public and welcomes public comments.
