Orca Expert Howard Garrett

Garrett, of the Orca Network, reveals the lives of these little-understood Salish Sea inhabitants.

Garrett will present a brief history of the growth of scientific knowledge about our resident orcas and about the natural history of orcas worldwide. Now down to only 74 members, our resident orcas are barely surviving. Garrett will talk about Gov. Inslee's Orca Recovery Executive Order, and the resulting Task Force process to find solutions.

He will look at our changing attitudes toward orcas, the current environmental hazards impacting them (along with possible mitigations), and will provide an update on the improved prospects for the return of Lolita, the L pod orca captured in Penn Cove in 1970, now a marine performer in the Miami Seaquarium.

Garrett has worked with Southern resident orca of the Pacific Northwest for over thirty years, beginning as a field assistant with the Center for Whale Research.

Join our Senior Dog Foster training and help us with that mission. This is a no obligation training. We encourage everyone to come and learn about the program, and help us get these sweet ol dogs out of the shelter and into the comfort of a home. We hope to see you at the training!

Psychologist Diane Gillespie, author of "Stories for Going Back to Sleep," helps craft scenarios designed to help people fall asleep after having wakened in the night.

Sleeplessness is one of the most commonand debilitatingconditions that Americans face today. Medications can be helpful, but also bring problems of their own.

Gillespie relies on principles of cognitive behavior therapy to create effective stories set in relaxing places conducive to sleep: cozy mountain cabins, luxurious spas, a tropical beach, an overstuffed chair in a Victorian Bed and Breakfast. In each story, the character secures her surroundings, then, through the process of attending to peaceful details in the setting, she relaxes her body, lets worries float away and sinks deeper and deeper into stillnessuntil she is asleep.
